🌿 Writer's Corner Exercise #1: Know Thyself!
🌿 Welcome to the Writer's Corner! ☀️
As a visual artist exploring the world of Solarpunk, I've found that words are just as powerful as images. 🎨 This is where I share my insights on writing, blogging, and crafting stories that embrace sustainability, community, and a hopeful future. 🌱 Let's build brighter worlds, one word at a time! ✏️
This was a fabulous exercise that really gets at the central theme of improving as a writer and that is self awareness. You have to know what you are before you can get to where you want to go. The results of this exercise is fun, and most certainly a fresh idea on improving as a writer in 2025!
The Exercise: "Solarpunk Street Scene"
Here's the plan:
- You Write: I'll give you a prompt. You'll write a short descriptive passage (around 100-200 words) in your natural style, without overthinking it. Just let your creativity flow.
- Initial Self-Reflection: Before we involve AI, you'll briefly analyze your own writing. What do you notice about your word choice, sentence structure, tone, etc.? What do you like about your writing, and what do you think you could improve?
-
ChatGPT Analysis: We'll feed your passage to ChatGPT with specific instructions to analyze your style (not to rewrite it). We'll ask it to identify:
- Tone (e.g., optimistic, descriptive, whimsical, formal, etc.)
- Sentence Structure (e.g., simple, complex, varied, etc.)
- Word Choice (e.g., vivid, technical, repetitive, etc.)
- Figurative Language (e.g., metaphors, similes, personification)
- Strengths
- Potential Weaknesses (areas for improvement)
- Reflection and Refinement: We'll discuss ChatGPT's analysis. Do you agree with it? Does it reveal anything surprising?
- Targeted Improvement: Based on the analysis, we'll identify one specific aspect of your writing to focus on. I'll give you a mini-lesson or exercise related to that aspect.
- Rewrite (Optional): You can optionally rewrite your original passage, incorporating what you've learned.
- Feedback.
The Prompt:
Imagine you're standing on a bustling street corner in your "In Town, Solar Street" world. Describe the scene. Focus on the sights, sounds, and overall atmosphere. Remember your key themes: childlike wonder, experimentation, connection to the earth, and the "lines we have to stay inside of."
Ready to write? Take your time, and don't worry about being perfect. This is about exploration! Once you've written your passage, paste it here, and we'll move on to the next steps.
🌿 Writer's Corner Exercise #2: Editing like a Pro
🚀 How to Edit Like a Pro: Master Self-Editing & Sharpen Your Writing
📌 Writing Corner Tips & Tricks from FindLitBooks.com
If you want to edit like a pro, whether it's your writing, videos, or even social media content, mastering the art of self-editing is essential. A well-edited piece isn’t just cleaner—it’s sharper, more engaging, and leaves a lasting impact on your audience.
Most writers (even experienced ones!) struggle with editing their own work. But with the right techniques, tools, and mindset, you can trim the fluff, strengthen your sentences, and refine your writing style—just like the pros.
This FindLitBooks Writing Corner guide will show you how to edit like a pro, spot common mistakes, and take your writing to the next level. Let’s dive in!
📝 Step 1: Identify Your Writing Crutches
Before you can improve, you need to pinpoint what’s holding you back.
🔍 Find Your Overused Words & Phrases
Every writer has crutch words—those little filler words that sneak into your sentences and weaken your writing.
🚨 Common Offenders:
- Just, really, very, that (These words often add little value.)
- Started to, began to (Usually, just saying the action is stronger.)
- Was/were, had (Check if you can replace with stronger verbs.)
💡 Example:
❌ She was really tired, so she started to walk home.
✅ Exhausted, she trudged home.
📊 How to Track These Words in Your Writing
🖥 Microsoft Word Method:
1️⃣ Click Edit > Find > Advanced Find and Replace.
2️⃣ Type your target word in both Find what: and Replace with: fields.
3️⃣ Click Format > Highlight, then Replace All.
4️⃣ Now, scroll through and spot the overused words instantly!
📝 Scrivener Users:
Use word frequency search to see how often you repeat certain words. The results might surprise you!
💡 Personal Example:
In a 219-page novel, I used the word "through" 99 times. 🤯 I was floored. I never noticed until I ran a word frequency search.
💡 Step 2: Cut the Fluff & Strengthen Your Sentences
A big part of editing like a pro is cutting unnecessary words and making every sentence tight and impactful.
🚀 Pro Editing Tip: The "50% Rule"
Take a paragraph from your writing and try to cut it by 50%—without losing meaning.
💡 Example Before Editing:
"In order to improve your writing skills, you should take time to review your work and analyze where you might be making errors in sentence structure, word choice, and clarity."
✂️ After Editing:
"To improve your writing, review your work for sentence structure, word choice, and clarity."
✅ Tighter. Stronger. More engaging.
🎯 Step 3: Master the Art of Flow & Readability
📝 Read It Out Loud
If something sounds awkward or clunky when read aloud, it needs revision.
📌 Pro Tip: Read your work out loud in a different accent or robotic voice—you’ll catch awkward phrasing instantly.
👀 Edit in Reverse
Editing sentence by sentence from the end of your piece backward forces you to focus on clarity and structure instead of getting lost in the story.
💻 Step 4: Use Editing Tools Like a Pro
Even the best writers use editing software to fine-tune their work. Here are the best tools:
🔹 Grammarly – Great for grammar and style suggestions.
🔹 ProWritingAid – Perfect for in-depth analysis and readability checks.
🔹 Hemingway Editor – Helps you cut complex sentences and passive voice.
🔹 Scrivener – Best for tracking word usage and frequency.
🚀 Step 5: Edit Like a Pro Beyond Writing
Self-editing skills aren’t just for writing—they apply to videos, social media, and even photo editing!
🎬 Want to Edit Videos Like a Pro?
If you’re into content creation, you’ve probably searched for:
✅ How to edit a video like a pro (5,400 searches/month)
✅ How to edit YouTube videos like a pro (590 searches/month)
✅ How to edit TikTok videos like a pro (320 searches/month)
The principles are the same as writing:
✔️ Cut the fluff
✔️ Keep it engaging
✔️ Maintain a strong flow
🛠 Example:
If you’re editing a video, cut out long pauses, unnecessary clips, and filler words, just like you’d remove redundant words from writing.
📢 Why Every Writer Should Have a Blog: Your Editing Playground
At FindLitBooks.com, we believe that every writer should have a blog.
A blog isn’t just a way to build an audience—it’s a microcosm of your writing world, a space where you can experiment, refine, and apply the very editing principles that make great writing great.
Think of it as your personal writing lab—a place to test sentence structures, play with tone, and see in real time what works and what doesn’t. It’s where you learn to edit like a pro because you’re forced to cut fluff, clarify ideas, and engage readers—all skills that carry over into your fiction, essays, and any other writing you do.
The best part? Unlike a novel, blog posts are low-risk, high-reward. You get instant feedback, and every post is a chance to level up your craft.
So if you don’t already have a blog, start one. Use it to apply the editing principles we’ve talked about, track your crutch words, and hone your ability to write with impact. Your future self (and your readers) will thank you. 🚀
